Fresh Apple Butter

Yield: 12 ounces

Skill level: Easy

This homemade apple butter is slow-cooked to bring out a deep, rich flavor with warm notes of cinnamon, cloves, and brown sugar. As the apples break down, they transform into a smooth, spreadable texture that works across breakfast, snacks, and baking. Finished with a touch of vanilla and lemon juice, this recipe is simple to make and stores well, making it a reliable staple to keep on hand for everyday use.

Warm spices and apples cooked down into a thick, spreadable staple

Ingredients

  • 9- 10 Autumn Glory® apples, peeled and cored
  • 1 cup of quality apple cider
  • ¾ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions

  1. Place prepped apples and all other ingredients, minus the lemon juice, into a large pot.
  2. Cook over medium heat, uncovered, stirring every 5-10 minutes until the apples are partially broken down and soft. This will take 50- 60 minutes.
  3. Next, use an immersion blender to blend the apple mixture until smooth.
  4. Then, return the mixture to your pot. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring until thickened. You ultimately want a thick, silky, deep brown.
  5. Once you are satisfied with the color, texture, etc., remove from the heat and stir in lemon juice.
  6. Transfer to jars or storage containers.
  7. Keep refrigerated, and enjoy all the things- like drizzled in oatmeal, on biscuits, etc.
