August is a busy month in the Superfresh Growers farms. We are harvesting four categories of Superfresh fruit simultaneously: cherries, blueberries, apples, and pears, and we are preparing for kiwi berries in September. We join Dave Gleason, Horticulturist, and Proprietary Variety Developer, as he recaps the summer harvest and discusses planning for the new apple crop season.
With cool nights, warm days, and plenty of water from the Cascade snowpack, Washington State is the best place to grow apples. It is also known for its sunlight, which produces large fruit and high sugar levels. Gleason uses a Cosmic Crisp® apple orchard as an example of the structural planning that goes into orchard building. With intense sun in mind, shade cloth protects the apples, mitigating risks.
