Orchard Update Episode 48

The winter season is upon us here in Washington State! Winter is an incredibly vital time for Washington growers as the mountains fill with snow that will soon melt to fill the lakes and rivers for our 2020 growing season. Dave Gleason, Horticulturist, and Proprietary Variety Developer, explains in our latest orchard update how this slower season is crucial for planning. Our farm team uses this time to analyze the previous harvest and discuss how we can improve for the coming crop.

In this orchard update, Gleason also draws attention to what is at the forefront of everyone's minds at Superfresh Growers®: sustainability! Establishing new orchards and examining soil health is essential to sustain healthy growing practices for years. As multigenerational growers, we use more than 125 years of experience to ensure that the next one hundred years of farming is viable for future generations.

Varieties such as Autumn Glory® and Cosmic Crisp® apples are making waves not only for Superfresh Growers but also for the apple industry as a whole. New and delicious varieties like these are why consumers love Washington apples! Gleason says that learning to grow and market these new varieties requires examining our entire business model, describing it as a “holistic approach to Apple management.”
