Before planting can even begin, the existing orchard must be cleared, as pictured in part one of this journey. “After you pull those trees out,” Dave explains, “there are holes in place, and there are ruts left over.” These leftover marks in the soil are where meticulous ground preparation comes into play. Cultivating, ripping, and addressing compaction layers from years of tractor use are all crucial steps in returning the land to greenfield zero- a clean slate, ready for the next phase.
With the ground prepped, the next step is ensuring precise alignment with straight planting lines. Just like in any construction project, accuracy in measurements ensures that the orchard is well-organized, allowing for efficient management and long-term success.
Once the foundation is set, the real labor begins with planting the trees. This process is often done by hand and is a physically demanding task that requires precision and care. Following tree planting is probably the most crucial step in ensuring a prosperous crop.
Young trees need proper support to protect against wind and movement, which can hinder growth. Providing the right support gives the trees the best chance to thrive and grow in their designated space. Depending on the soil’s condition, this could involve driving posts into the ground or, in rockier soils, digging holes manually.
With the posts in place, irrigation quickly follows. Giving these young trees their first drink of water within an hour of planting is essential to help them settle into their new home.
By the end of this process, with trees firmly in the ground and water flowing, the foundation for a successful orchard is laid. “A strong start sets the stage for a bountiful harvest and years of productivity.”
