It’s the moment we’ve been working toward all year. The orchards are buzzing with activity as the apple and pear harvest begins. During this time, the process of handpicking may look simple to the eye, but it is a skillful process that requires precision. For years, ladders have been a tool of choice, allowing workers to reach fruit that’s high in the trees. Each apple must also be carefully placed into shoulder bags and then gently emptied into large bins that can hold up to 2,000 apples, all while protecting the fruit from bruising.
Now, with newer practices, we’re shifting toward the use of platforms, which make harvest more efficient for our crews. Workers can easily reach the trees, fill their bags, and place the apples directly into the bins without having to climb up and down ladders. These innovations not only speed up the process but also improve safety for our crews.
With excellent fruit quality, strong sizing, and beautiful color, the season is off to a successful start. This time of the year is our visual reminder of the dedication and detail behind every apple and pear that makes its way to your tables.
